Sixteen hunting, conservation and other organizations urged California Gov. Gavin Newsom to sign a bill allowing bowhunters to carry a firearm during archery season. AB 1912 would correct a longstanding inconsistency in California law to carry a firearm capable of being concealed on their person for protection while afield.

"Archery deer hunters often travel alone in remote backcountry areas, far from roads, cell service or immediate assistance," according to a letter sent to Gov. Newsom. "They frequently enter and leave these areas before daylight or after sunset and may travel considerable distances through rugged terrain. Encounters with large predators and illegal marijuana cultivation sites present legitimate safety concerns in many hunting areas. Allowing these individuals to carry a concealable firearm for lawful personal protection is a reasonable safety measure."

Current law has an outdated prohibition, enacted in 1947, that prevents individuals pursuing deer during the archery-only season from carrying a firearm, even for personal protection. Similar restrictions no longer apply to hunters pursuing other big game species during archery seasons.

The bill does not change the lawful method of take during deer archery season.
